Washington alive in East race, but focused on cleaning up mess

The NFC East's collective awfulness is why Washington, despite dropping two straight, is mathematically still very much alive in the race for the division title. Chase Young on game-changing penalty: ‘It happens’

In Washington's 30-27 loss, Young gave up a game-changing roughing-the-passer penalty with 12 seconds left when he hit Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford after the signal-caller had thrown the ball. The penalty moved the ball to the 50-yard, Detroit hit a nine-yard completion and kicker Matt Prater sunk a 59-yarder as time expired.

Alex Smith’s arm cannot top Prater’s leg

Making his first start in two years, Smith passed for almost 400 yards and survived a blitz-happy Lions defense to erase a 21-point deficit and tie the score, twice. But with 16 seconds left, Matt Stafford put together just enough of a drive to get Prater, who holds the record for the NFL's longest kick, into field goal range.
