In an interconnected world, it takes a particular eye to master the intricacy of it through photography. ‘Cameraperson’ filmmaker Kirsten Johnson reinvents the cinema

Filmmaker Kirsten Johnson has, quite simply, reinvented cinema. Her docu-narrative film, "Cameraperson," is both the year's best film and its most revolutionary. Ms. Johnson, a New York-based cinematographer for other documentarians, has fashioned a work from the scraps of other films she has worked on over a quarter-century, mixed in with her own home videos of her children and her ailing mother -- stricken with Alzheimer's and fading fast -- into a whole that is not just greater than the sum of its parts, but a revolution in what movies can be.

Jennifer Connelly says ‘American Pastoral’ character drew her to Philip Roth adaptation

"I think it's a great story. I really like the book," Jennifer Connelly told The Washington Times of the adaptation of Philip Roth's Pulitzer Prize-winning book about a midcentury New Jersey tanner named Seymour "Swede" Levov (Ewan McGregor) and his wife Dawn (Miss Connelly), whose lives are turned upside-down by unspeakable acts committed by their daughter Mary (Dakota Fanning).

‘Desierto’ thriller from ‘Gravity’ director Jonas Cuaron takes on immigration

Jonas Cuaron, director of the new border thriller "Desierto," insists that his film is not a political statement but rather a proud example of the suspense genre. No matter that the hero of the piece, Moises (Gael Garcia Bernal) is guiding fellow Mexicans through the desert after crossing the border from Mexico, and that they are being hunted by a self-appointed border guard, Sam (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). Never mind, as well, that Mr. Cuaron and his filmmaker father, Oscar-winner Alfonso Cuaron, are natives of Mexico.

MOVIE REVIEW: ‘Cameraperson’ is unlike any other film ever made

"Cameraperson" is unlike any film I have ever seen. It is neither a documentary nor a narrative -- nor is it precisely a hybrid of those forms, even though it toys with both. Even to describe it is to take away from its singular magic as what so many films about superheroes and explosions aspire but never achieve: an experience of pure cinema.

‘Father Joseph’ shows faith of Catholic priest in helping Haiti after earthquake

Father Joseph Philippe does not consider himself to be a hero -- nor a particularly interesting subject for a documentary. However, filmmaker Jeff Kaufman believed otherwise, and followed the Haitian Catholic priest for years as he worked tirelessly to increase education and financial opportunities for poor, rural Haitians -- especially women. "Father Joseph," now available on demand, chronicles Father Philippe's efforts to build a school and orphanage, and to help the Haitian poor become financially independent and increasingly literate.
