CHICAGO (AP) - A 29-year-old suburban Chicago man has been convicted of resisting a police officer while armed and now faces up to 30 years in prison.
Jurors convicted Roberto B. Ramos of armed violence after he resisted as two Aurora officers sought to serve him with a warrant outside his home in 2012.
The Kane County state’s attorney’s office says in a Thursday statement that Ramos was carrying a loaded handgun at the time. At one point, he pulled it from his waistband, tried to throw it to someone else and told the acquaintance to run.
Prosecutors say Ramos told police later he needed the weapon to protect himself from rival gang members.
The officer who wrestled with Ramos was injured but has since recovered.
Sentencing is set for May 8.
