Gus Kenworthy, a freestyle skier who won a silver medal in Sochi, speaks in his home in Denver on Oct. 21, 2015. “We’re in China, so we play by China’s rules. And China makes their rules as they go, and they certainly have the power to kind of do whatever they want: Hold an athlete, stop an athlete from leaving, stop an athlete from competing,” Kenworthy said on Sunday, Feb. 20, at the 2022 Beijing Olympics. FILE - In this Feb. 18, 2018, file photo, Gus Kenworthy, of the United States, jumps during the men's slopestyle final at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. These days, freestyle skier Gus Kenworthy is one tough act to follow. His talents have him starring in a variety of roles both on and off the slopes. He's an actor (recently appearing in "American Horror Story: 1984"), gay-rights advocate (he came out in 2015) and friend to animals (rescuing stray dogs). Of course, he's also an innovative slopestyle/halfpipe competitor who recently switched countries and will now represent Britain (to honor his mom). (AP Photo/Kin Cheung, File)

When Smith and Carlos raised their fists 50 years ago at the Mexico City Olympics, they had a captive audience, back in the age when TV was king and the entire audience was rapt. A half-century later, many of the messages our athletes disseminate are every bit as powerful, but the audience is much more distracted. (AP Photo/Sait Serkan Gurbuz, File)

FILE - In this Sept. 25, 2017, file photo, U.S. freestyle skier Gus Kenworthy poses for a portrait at the Team USA Winter Olympics media summit in Park City, Utah. Kenworthy already has an Olympic medal, from Sochi, and the chance for another at the games in Pyeongchang. But what gives the skier even greater satisfaction than winning is when his pioneering and still rare example as an openly gay athlete encourages others be open about themselves, too. Kenworthy's life has changed, and unlike most athletes who make it big at the Olympics, it's only partly because of the medal he won. His supposedly perfect stay in Russia was something much less, however, mainly because of the secret he kept. He was gay but would not tell the world for almost another two years.
