Max Scherzer, Stephen Strasburg set to pitch opening series in Atlanta

Manager Dusty Baker had anticipated previously that left-hander Gio Gonzalez would slot between Scherzer and Strasburg. With an off day between the opener and second game, plus an off day Friday, the Nationals are still figuring out who will pitch the home opener on Thursday.

Virginia advances to Elite Eight behind Gill, Tobey

Surprising teams await in Virginia’s Midwest region

Virginia moved into the Sweet 16 for the second time in the last three seasons when it beat Butler last week in Raleigh, North Carolina. The Cavaliers find themselves in a four-team pod with two surprises and one expected visitor.

Wizards’ playoff chances remain slim, but not over

By staying even, the Washington Wizards are losing. An abominable five-game losing streak has been followed by a five-game winning streak to whisk the Wizards back to the .500 mark. With 12 games to play, they are a still-underachieving 35-35 and remain 1.5 games out of a playoff spot.

Smaller lineup keeps Virginia moving in NCAA tournament

The game was not structured for Mike Tobey's traits. He shot well -- 5-for-5 from the field, he was just too big for Butler on offense. But, there wasn't a defensive place for him on the floor when Anthony Gill was out there, so Tobey played just nine minutes and spent the evening cheering. That ever-mechanical Virginia could adapt by not using one of its crucial players can be considered a sign this tournament may be different.
