GENE MUELLER: Bay is perfect for rockfish

This week showed it's still all about the Chesapeake's stripers. "The fishing was really good this week," said Christy Henderson of Buzz's Marina on St. Jerome's Creek. "Rockfish were scattered between the HS Buoy and Buoy 68. They are also concentrated at the mouth of the Potomac River. Some people are reporting catches in the double digits, with others catching only three to four stripers."

GENE MUELLER: No sale on these catalogs

Being a hunter and fisherman who occasionally purchases some kind of equipment or small item that makes life in the outdoors a little easier, I'm certain you'll have no trouble believing I'm the recipient of every outdoors catalog that's ever been printed.

Bad weather comes with good fishing

The Thanksgiving Day weekend can deliver good fishing action, but it depends on the waters you choose. Of course, unknown factors like sudden high winds, rain showers or severely dropping temperatures can affect your chances of hooking something. But always remember that bad weather often affects humans more than it does fish.

GENE MUELLER: Fish still biting despite cold

The single thing that hampered fishing efforts for most of us this week was the unrelenting wind. That, however, is coming to an end, and even if it's cold out on the water, the fish are biting. Of course, it all depends which waters you choose.

GENE MUELLER: ‘Tis the season for Potomac perch

"Let's go and see if the yellow perch have started to hang out in the creek bends," my neighbor Dale Knupp said. "We'll use only little drop-shot rigs with 3-inch plastic shiners, or a plain Sting Ray grub on 1/4-ounce or 1/8-ounce jig hooks."

Gene Mueller: Rockfish invading Bay waters

Everyone is talking about the large striped bass that have left the Atlantic and now are invading the Chesapeake Bay to feed on menhaden and fatten up for the winter. Whopper rockfish are hooked from Smith Point in Virginia's Northern Neck up to and past Maryland's Hooper's Island Light, Calvert Cliffs and beyond Bloody Point.

GENE MUELLER: Potomac delivers largemouth bass

Professional fishing guide Dale Knupp is convinced the tidal Potomac River between the District and western Charles County is home to the best bass fishing on the East Coast.

Gene Mueller: Md. bear hunt appears to be limited success

As bear hunting goes, little old Maryland never will threaten the lofty status of eastern states like Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia - never mind the heavy hitters like Maine and any number of northern tier states.

GENE MUELLER: Poachers shouldn’t be called hunters

The stupidity of some people must never be underestimated, and the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries occasionally provides classic examples of it whenever none-too-bright poachers are caught red-handed.

Mueller: Drawing anglers from all corners

Several fellows flew in from England just so they could catch an American carp; one came from from Serbia, another from Canada, and the rest from just about every corner of the United States, including Al St. Cyr of Texas, who some time ago won $250,000 in a fishing contest. They all arrived at Hains Point in downtown Washington in the early morning hours to hook common garden variety carp, of which the Potomac River has an abundance.

Weekend Fishing Report

After the weekend rain and wind you would have thought that local waters would be discolored, with fish clamping their jaws tightly and not bite anything. But that's not what has happened. Autumn fishing has begun and it is particularly noteworthy in the upper tidal Potomac River where largemouth bass, catfish and resident yellow perch aren't the least bit bashful about attacking a lure.
