Yankees top Nationals in rain-shortened first game of baseball’s return

Thunder, lightning and buckets of rain interrupted what was supposed to be baseball's triumphant return from the coronavirus pandemic in the nation's capital Thursday night. After about two hours in delay, the game was called and the New York Yankees beat the Washington Nationals in five innings.

Anthony Fauci tosses a wayward first pitch at Nationals opener

Dr. Anthony Fauci -- the country's leading expert on infectious diseases, a White House coronavirus task force member and a big Washington Nationals fan -- was the guest of honor Thursday night at Nationals Park and tossed out the first pitch of the Major League Baseball season opener.

Nationals, Yankees kneel for moment of silence, then stand for anthem

Before Thursday's Major League Baseball season opener, all Washington Nationals and New York Yankees players on the field held a black length of fabric and observed a moment of silence for Black victims of brutality. The players kneeled together for part of the observance, but everyone then stood for a pre-recorded performance of "The Star-Spangled Banner."

Mystics will rely on bench players to step up in weird 2020 WNBA season

This surely isn't what the Washington Mystics had planned for their WNBA title defense. No Natasha Cloud and LaToya Sanders. For the foreseeable future, no Elena Delle Donne. The Mystics will need to look to their bench for players to take on expanded roles -- good thing their bench is so strong.

High school football this fall? Not in D.C., Montgomery County and elsewhere

The D.C. State Athletic Association (DCSAA), which governs high school athletics in the District, announced its decision last week to move the fall sports season into 2021, between the winter and spring seasons. Virginia will not have high school football in its traditional autumn window, either.
