The East Coast was preparing Thursday for heavy rain and potential flooding, as a massive cross-country storm was set to descend upon about 120 million Americans in the region.

The Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states should expect 1 to 3 inches of rain, with some of the downpour forecasted to bring a flood risk to parts of New York and New England, according to Fox Weather.

Meteorologists said the Interstate 95 corridor from Massachusetts to Virginia will likely see the most rain, especially along the coast.

Forecasts show the rain continuing through Thursday and Friday before tapering off over the weekend. The weather will dry up in the south and then gradually move up north.

Weather reports say the flooding risk will be most acute in Rhode Island and parts of southeastern Massachusetts. Areas of southern Connecticut, Massachusetts and Suffolk County, New York, could also experience flooding.

The same system already hit portions of Georgia and Tennessee, with counties along the two states’ shared border witnessing a flash flood emergencies early Thursday.
