Mei Xiang delivers her fourth panda cub in 15 years

Giant panda Tian Tian nosed through a green spool of leaf-eater biscuits and fruit, spinning and shaking it around to dig out every piece of food Saturday morning at the Smithsonian National Zoo, seemingly unaware of his newborn "miracle" offspring, cradled in its mother's arms in the next den over.

Panda cub born at D.C. National Zoo

Giant panda Mei Xiang gave birth to a cub at Smithsonian's National Zoo on Friday evening, making her the oldest panda, at 22 years old, in the U.S. and the second oldest in the world to do so.

Montgomery County opening up athletic fields for certain sports

Montgomery County this week opened up athletic fields for low- and medium-risk sports games for groups of 50 or less at local parks, recreation centers and public schools. Starting next month, fields at regional and recreational parks will also open.

Maryland election board to put at least 270 ballot drop boxes in place for November election

The Maryland State Board of Elections on Wednesday said that at least 270 ballot drop boxes will be put in place throughout the state for the Nov. 3 general election, a large increase from the 75 that were made available for this year's primary election. The ballot drop boxes will be delivered to local boards of elections beginning the week of Sept. 28, who will open the boxes soon after arrival.

D.C. to hire 175 more virus contact tracers

District officials announced Monday that the city's health department will hire 175 more contact tracers, boosting its force up to 450 staff members to respond to the coronavirus pandemic, and start home visits later this week.

CDC: Infected people may test positive for COVID-19 for up to three months

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Friday evening said it has updated its guidance on coronavirus-related isolation, which reflects the latest science showing that people can continue to test positive for COVID-19 for up to three months after diagnosis while being non-infectious. But, the CDC also warned, that does not mean those patients are safe from possible reinfection.

Maryland’s American Gene Technologies to test HIV drug

Rockville-based American Gene Technologies said this week it will be testing the safety of AGT103-T, a single-dose cell product made from blood cells that increases HIV-fighting T cells and uses gene therapy to help these cells survive in the body, in trial participants.

D.C. man charged with $2 million coronavirus relief scheme

Federal prosecutors have charged a D.C. man with fraudulently applying for and collecting more than $2 million in coronavirus relief funds, which they say he used to buy a $1.13 million townhouse, a $300,000 yacht and a $46,000 luxury sports sedan.
