Vladimir Putin uses NATO weakness for Russia dominance over Turkey

Turkey, a NATO member, shot down a Russian SU-24 fighter bomber that briefly entered its airspace during attacks on rebels in Syria in late 2015. The deliberate Turkish action was meant to push back against an aggressive Russia that had repeatedly ignored Turkish warnings, showing a complete disregard for the sovereignty of a NATO country.

China claims just about all of the Spratly Islands in the South China Sea as their sovereign territory. Unfortunately for them, most of the islands are also claimed and controlled by the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia and Taiwan.

American and Russian forces in Syria have been tip toeing around each other for a year now. A few days ago, it almost got really serious. Last week, American F-18s, launched from a carrier in the Mediterranean, tried and failed to stop Russian jets from bombing U.S.-backed forces fighting the Islamic State in Syria.

Russia deploying troops to western border

NATO, worried about Russian actions in Ukraine and its aggressive military maneuvers worldwide, especially in the Baltic Sea, has been exercising large numbers of troops in former Soviet and Warsaw Pact territory to deter any Russian thoughts of westward expansion. Russia has vowed to respond to NATO's visible buildup with a shift in forces of its own.

China says it will ignore South China Sea arbitration decision

It is no secret that China has been extending territorial claims throughout the South China Sea in a bid to extend its military and commercial influence in the region. However, at the same time, China has been pushing to be seen as an international power in financial and other circles. These two goals are not compatible.
