The Washington Nationals announced a new ticket policy Tuesday for games affected by the coronavirus, introducing options for refunds and a credit program that would apply to future events.
The news comes a day after MLB owners agreed for the league to submit a proposal to the player’s union that would launch the regular season around the Fourth of July and play games without fans. Two weeks ago, the league granted permission to teams to be able to offer refunds, USA Today reported.
On its website, the Nationals say they will offer a “100% credit” on games that fans are unable to attend due to COVID-19, which can be used to purchase any future tickets. The team added it will also provide a bonus credit of 50%, letting fans apply it to concessions, parking, merchandise or tickets from the 2020 and 2021 season.
“For example, if you purchased a $50 ticket to a 2020 Nationals regular season game, you will receive a full $50 credit that you can put towards any ticket purchase,” the website reads. “In addition, you will receive a $25 bonus credit for use on additional tickets, seat upgrades, food and refreshments, merchandise, or a ticket donation during the 2020 and 2021 regular seasons.”
Season-ticket holders looking for a full refund are encouraged to reach out directly to their ticket representative, while fans who purchased single-game tickets can request a refund by visiting www.nationals.com/CreditForm.
Previously, Nationals season-ticket holders had voiced their complaints over the lack of communication from the team about its refund policy. In April, Twitter user Greta Arnold (@thelastgoodnite) tweeted to the team that she had bought a five-day pack, but had yet to hear anything back about a refund. Another user reached out asking the team to return their email.
On April 13, the Nationals had sent out an email to season-ticket holders that notified them that their April payment would be postponed until July.
As for the credit program, the Nationals’ new policy will only apply to those with pre-existing purchases. The team has suspended ticket sales for all 2020 games until further notice as the league still has not finalized when the season will start again.
