PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard has signed into law a measure designed to give children more time with divorced parents.

The legislation has failed in the past due to disagreements between shared parenting advocates and legal experts. The new law was based on an Iowa custody law and will take effect in July.

Supporters have said it’s better for children to have contact with both of their parents.

The policy does not establish a presumption of equal parenting, and judges will still have the final say in assigning custody.
