Ten days after signing veteran winger Mike Knuble, the Washington Capitals today added a veteran center, inking Brendan Morrison to a one-year contract.
Morrison, who turns 34 next month, is expected to be the leading contender to replace Sergei Fedorov as the Capitals’ second-line center although Brooks Laich and maybe even Michael Nylander will receive consideration during training camp.
Morrison has played for New Jersey, Vancouver, Anaheim and Dallas. Last year, he managed only 31 points in a combined 81 games for Anaheim and Dallas.
Morrison’s best years came with Vancouver — he scored 50 or more points in six straight seasons, including a career-high 71 points in 2002-03.
In 755 career games, he has 505 points and brings durability to the Capitals’ roster — he’s played the full 82 games in six seasons.
