The Old Farmers’ Almanac said parts of the Midwest and upper South have the greatest potential for snow during Thanksgiving week.

The almanac said snow showers and flurries are possible during the holiday week that could affect people’s travel plans for those venturing to the Great Lakes and the Ohio Valley regions.

States affected by the forecast include Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan and Ohio.

The Old Farmer’s Almanac was founded in 1792 and is one of the nation’s oldest periodicals still published each year.

But the almanac’s dependability remains up for debate.

The almanac boasts an 80% accuracy rate when predicting broad, seasonal trends in certain parts of the country. A University of Illinois study from the 1980s — the most frequently cited independent study of the almanac’s efficacy — said the almanac’s predictions hover closer to 50%.

The almanac said it has updated its collection methods in the more than four decades since that study was published, saying its forecasts are more precise now.
