A pair of “Star Wars” movies — one old, one new — are set to get the BIG screen treatment next year to mark the 50th anniversary of the sci-fi franchise.
“Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope” and “Star Wars: Starfighter” will be released in the IMAX format in 2027, Lucasfilm and Disney announced Tuesday.
“A New Hope,” the 1977 blockbuster that kicked off the franchise, will be re-released Feb. 17 for its first-ever presentation in the 70mm film format, the production company said.
Also getting the IMAX treatment is “Starfighter,” a standalone story directed by first-time “Star Wars” director Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Gosling in the lead role.
“When a cynical rogue is confronted by his mysterious past, he is hurled into a dangerous adventure across the galaxy that puts him on a crash course with destiny,” Lucasfilm said of the new feature film.
Both films will be shown at select IMAX locations. There are more than 350 commercial IMAX-branded digital and laser screens in the U.S., but only about 30 theaters can project the true 70mm format.
