Thursday marks National Donut Day across the U.S., the second such occasion in which Americans are urged to enjoy the doughy treats this year.

The first National Donut Day was June 5, or the first Friday of the June every year.

The summertime version of the holiday was started in 1938 by the Salvation Army to honor the “Donut Lassies” of World War I, who gave out the dessert-esque breakfast to soldiers.
