GRETNA, La. (AP) - A Marrero man who was jailed almost four years while awaiting his trial for sexually abusing a child a decade ago has pleaded guilty to forcible rape.
NOLA.com/The Times-Picayune reports (https://bit.ly/1gPNUyQ ) 37-year-old Michael W. Williams was sentenced Monday to 20 years in prison, for sexually abusing an 8-year-old girl in early 2004. The victim, who knew Williams, is now 17 years old.
By pleading guilty, Williams averted the possibility of spending the rest of his life in prison had he been convicted as charged of aggravated rape.
Williams was arrested for the rape in April 2010 and indicted four months later on the charge of aggravated rape of a juvenile. He was unable to post a $500,000 bond.
