A high school teacher in Manassas Park, Virginia, is facing charges after, police allege, she was drunk on school grounds during school hours.
At around 7:30 a.m. Thursday, staff at Manassas Park High told the school resource officer that a teacher appeared to be drunk.
After finding Shannon Sanders, 40, the officer determined she was intoxicated and arrested her, the City of Manassas Park Police Department said in a release.
The first block of classes at the high school starts at 7:25 a.m. each day, per the school’s website.
In a letter to the school community, Manassas Park City Schools officials said Ms. Sanders, whom they did not publicly name, “was not working directly with students at the time of the incident as they had just arrived on campus,” according to the news site InsideNoVa.
Ms. Sanders was taken to the Prince William County Adult Detention Center to sober up and now faces charges of public intoxication, the police said.
Ms. Sanders is due in Prince William County District Court for a hearing on the misdemeanor charge on Nov. 30, according to court records.
In their letter, city school officials said Ms. Sanders is on administrative leave and that the district has a zero-tolerance policy for alcohol or drugs on school grounds, according to InsideNoVa.
