A religious scholar says an account of Jesus that is nearly 2,000 years old may be more credible than many believed.

T.C. Schmidt, a religious studies professor at Fairfield University in Connecticut, wrote a book about ancient Jewish historian Josephus, who wrote about Jesus.

Mr. Schmidt’s 2025 book, “Josephus and Jesus: New Evidence for the One Called Christ,” discusses the ancient historian who lived from about 37 A.D. to 100 A.D. and wrote about Jesus in “Antiquities of the Jews.”

Josephus wrote that Jesus was a wise man who gathered a following and was crucified. His writings also state that Jesus was seen resurrected by early Christians three days after his death.

Josephus’ writings have been called into question over the centuries, but Mr. Schmidt told Fox News that in his analysis of the writings across five languages, he found similarities.

“I show that every single phrase in the passage can be indexed back to Josephus,” Mr. Schmidt said. “It all sounds like something Josephus would say.”

He added, “This actually sounds like something a non-Christian Jew would have said. We have other accounts of later Jews saying similar things about Jesus.”

Mr. Schmidt said that if real, Josephus’ writings “[solidify] Jesus in history.”
