Chicago police said they arrested a man early Tuesday after shots were fired outside of a federal building in the city.

Officials said the gunfire outside the John C. Kluczynski Federal Building erupted at about 4:45 a.m. Tuesday. A firearm and bullet casings were recovered at the scene, officials said.

The Department of Homeland Security said building security and Chicago police responded to an “active shooter” who was swiftly handcuffed.

“Local police took the subject into custody. There were no injuries reported, only minor damage to federal property. As this is an active and ongoing investigation, additional information will be limited until concluded,” Homeland Security said.

The federal building houses agency branches for the IRS, the General Services Administration, the Department of Labor and the offices of Sens. Durbin and Tammy Duckworth, both Illinois Democrats.
