Groundbreaking kicks off Packard Plant redevelopment

By COREY WILLIAMS - Associated Press

This April 4, 2017 photo in Detroit shows the vacant Packard car plant on the city's east side. Fernando Palazuelo's optimism, and $405,000 at a tax foreclosure auction, appeared to resuscitate life in the rusted iron lung of the hulking and crumbling car plant. FILE - In this Jan. 26, 1999 file photo, Dominic Cristini stands outside the Packard Motor Car Co. factory in Detroit. The Detroit Free Press reports, Wednesday, March 5, 2014, that Cristini wants Fernando Palazuelo, the owner of the Packard car plant complex, to pay for a piece of the land that Cristini says he still technically owns. Cristini says he could make a claim of ownership over most of the property. Palazuelo, a developer from Peru, bid $405,000 for the property last year during a tax foreclosure auction. He says Cristini wants $3.5 million and calls it "typical blackmail." (AP Photo/Carlos Osorio, File)
