PRINCE GEORGE, Va. (AP) - Officials say a man wanted in the death of his 1-year-old son in Virginia died in his jail cell by an apparent suicide.
The Riverside Regional Jail tells local news media outlets that it appears 25-year-old Artur Kharendzyuk (ka-RIN’-zik) killed himself. The jail says he was found unresponsive in his cell Monday evening.
The jail says the medical examiner’s office will determine the cause of death.
Kharendzyuk was wanted on a second-degree murder charge in Newport News. The child died Nov. 1, days after he was found unresponsive and not breathing.
Petersburg police arrested Kharendzyuk last week as he fled a bank robbery there. Investigators connected Kharendzyuk to five other robberies. Federal investigators had dubbed him the “Soul Patch Bandit,” referring to his facial hair.
