Do Americans now see the obvious answer to the problem of active shooters ("'Good Samaritan' who killed mall gunman was authorized under Indiana's constitutional carry law," Web, July 18)? From Indiana comes the direct solution to a bad guy with a gun: a good guy with a gun. America would be safer if we told the socialists to sit down and be quiet, while trained citizens handled this problem.

Eating better, less helps stay on budget

The nation's food banks are being overwhelmed with long lines of people who don't normally need the assistance, proof of the Biden administration's failure to address inflation ("Long lines are back at US food banks as inflation hits high," Web, July 14). Sadly, this is starting to remind me of the food lines my grandparents talked about experiencing during the Depression era. It is becoming increasingly obvious that this administration lacks expertise in economic forecasting (though many experts predicted this would happen).

Left faces gay-marriage road blocks

Most of the coverage of Sen. Ted Cruz's comment on overturning the Supreme Court's 2015 gay marriage ruling has missed a critical issue ("Ted Cruz says Supreme Court ruling legalizing gay marriage 'clearly wrong,'" Web, July 17). State activists are moving to change the laws to permit gay marriage, and in most states they are likely to succeed. However, there are two major problems for the Democrats in this effort.

Biden throws Britain under bus

President Biden's public comparison, in Saudi Arabia, of Israel's treatment of Palestinians to Britain's past in Ireland is a step too far. What about U.S. historical treatment of Mexicans, Cubans or Filipinos, and what about Mr. Biden's friendliness toward figures in the Irish Republican Army? Britain enjoyed excellent relations with the U.S. under Presidents Kennedy, Reagan and Clinton, all of whom had Irish ancestry, and it is self-indulgent and a dereliction for this president to make his personal background an issue.

Uvalde officers’ unthinkable missteps

"Systemic failures" is a neat and tidy term to describe the inactions of the police on the scene at the Robb Elementary School massacre in Uvalde, Texas ("'Systemic failures' in Uvalde school massacre, report finds," Web, July 17). But no excuse in the world can rectify the passivity and negligence shown by the officers who stood outside the classroom, sanitizing their hands while listening to screams and gunshots as children were being slaughtered. All the sanitizer in the world couldn't get the blood off their hands.

Democrats have no real candidates

Rumors of the invocation of the 25th Amendment, which provides the procedures for replacing the president in the event of death, removal, resignation or incapacitation, are continuing to emerge from Democratic power brokers. Whether that proceeding will come to pass is anyone's guess. At the same time, however, The Washington Post recently issued a ranking of the top 10 presidential candidates for 2024. The list was a stark reminder of how dreadfully weak the Democrats' bench is -- and brought to mind Disney's "Snow White."

Make an example of veteran defrauder

U.S. Attorney Zachary Cunha is a dolt for the plea deal he made with Sarah Cavanaugh, a Rhode Island woman who stole over $250,000 from the Providence VA and nonprofit groups but will only have to pay $82,000 in restitution. Cavanaugh faces more than 20 years in prison, but Cunha has agreed to recommend a very short jail term. What on Earth is he thinking? He is obviously not a military veteran and has no respect for veterans.

Trump should step aside
