EDITORIAL: Federal budget deficit is now the highest in seven years

A single death is a tragedy; a million deaths is a statistic, Joseph Stalin is reputed to have observed. (And as one of the most prolific murderers of the 20th century, Old Joe should have known of what he spoke.) Likewise, losing 20 or even 100 bucks is deeply annoying. But losing $1 trillion? Why, that's mere statistic — indeed, to us mere mortals, $1 trillion is an unfathomable amount.

The news media is generally remarkably harsh on Republicans, and President Trump in particular. However, what the Democrats did to both Supreme Court justices Clarence Thomas and Brett Kavanaugh — with media support — was outrageous. It reminds me of what a kangaroo court did to Captain Alfred Dreyfus in France in the 1890s. That split apart French society in a serious way, and it seems to me that both the news media and the Democrats are splitting apart America now. I hope these parties reconsider their actions, conform to honest principles and begin acting in a more responsible way.

Every day, hundreds of thousands of responsible, legally armed citizens move among us, all across America — on our streets, in our stores and elsewhere. We don't recognize them or even think of them because remarkably, in spite of their numbers, we never hear of one of them causing trouble with a gun, though they often put a stop to robberies and killings, usually without firing a shot.

EDITORIAL: Democrats vie frantically with the collusion facts

If there are two sides to every story, they both deserve to be heard. In the epic tale of foreign influence in the 2016 presidential election, the narrative about Russia helping Donald Trump was exhaustively probed and ultimately debunked. As Americans gape at Democrats' current efforts to impugn and impeach President Trump, they should be mindful that the gathering political storm represents the party's desperate efforts to suppress the other side of the story — that it was Hillary Clinton's campaign, together with Obama administration officials, who conspired with foreign governments to steal the election.

Recent coverage of the Trump administration's sanctions of the socialist Maduro regime omits one important element. Earlier this summer, the Trump administration issued sanctions against Venezuela's state-owned oil company, effectively blocking North American investors from claiming their rightful property in CITGO, its U.S. division. Juan Guaido's interim government of Venezuela supported the move. They want to eliminate investors' property rights in CITGO.

EDITORIAL: Joe and Hunter Bidens’ activities in Ukraine

Joe Biden just couldn't quit Ukraine. When he served as vice president, Mr. Biden travelled more than once to Ukraine to strongarm the Slavic country into ousting its top prosecutor, one Victor Shokin. On his December 2015 visit to Kyiv and a subsequent March 2016 journey to the country, Mr. Biden brought with him what is commonly referred to as "leverage." The Obama administration threatened to withhold aid from the country, unless they canned Mr. Shoki. A lot of aid, too: Some $1 billion in loan guarantees. That was a serious threat to war-torn Ukraine, which can at times barely keep its own lights on.

It doesn't matter what former Dallas cop Amber Guyger thought when she shot neighbor Botham Jean in 2018 ("Dallas jury convicts ex-cop in neighbor's death," Web, Oct. 1). Ignorance is no defense under the law. All that really mattered in deliberating this case was the fact that the apartment Guyger mistakenly walked into was not hers to defend.

The unrelenting quest by the Democrats to oust our duly elected president for their own self-serving interests (and their willingness to stretch it to any length possible) is a genuine disgrace ("Republican wants Adam Schiff censured for making up Trump quotes," Web, Sept. 25). Rep. Schiff, chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, could serve as the poster child for this disgrace, with his pathetic performance of formally uttering lies about President Trump and Ukraine and entering them into the congressional record as a means to a subversive end.
