PACIFICA, Calif. (AP) - A woman died after her car went over a barrier and tumbled down a 200-feet cliff off Highway 1 near Pacifica Monday, officials said.
Firefighters battling the massive CZU Lightning Complex rescued the woman after her silver sedan came to rest on an outcropping above the beach near Gray Whale Cove south of Devils Slide, KPIX-TV reported.
Emergency workers had carried the critically injured driver up the cliffside and put her in an ambulance to San Francisco General Hospital, where she died, California Highway Patrol officer Mark Andrews said.
Witnesses told rescuers that the woman, who was the only occupant of the vehicle, was able to get herself out of the car, but fell further down the rocks, where firefighters from the CalFire San Mateo-Santa Cruz Unit performed the dramatic cliff rescue.
No other vehicles were involved in the crash, and investigators did not have an immediate theory on how it unfolded. They did not release the identity of the driver.
