PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A state lawmaker in Rhode Island resigned Monday, citing plans to move for a new job.

Democratic Rep. Shelby Maldonado, of Central Falls, resigned, effective immediately, from the House District 56 seat she has held in the House of Representatives since January 2015, according to the General Assembly.

The 32-year-old lawmaker is moving to New York for a position as the Hispanic outreach director of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, according to a statement.

Maldonado was named a deputy majority leader in January. She is the second vice chairwoman of both the House Committee on Municipal Government and the House Committee on Conduct. She currently works as a union spokeswoman.

A special election will be scheduled.

Maldonado said she has enjoyed representing the city she grew up in, and the people who have given her so many opportunities.
