COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Prosecutors say a man who shot and wounded two South Carolina police officers in 2017 has been sentenced to the maximum on a federal gun charge.
News outlets cite a U.S. Attorney’s Office statement as saying 21-year-old Eugene James was ordered to serve 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm. U.S. Attorney Sherri Lydon said Tuesday that evidence presented to the court against the Orangeburg resident showed he shot the Cayce police officers after a car chase which went into Columbia.
Authorities say both officers suffered leg wounds. One also was hit in a bulletproof vest. James was wounded in the shootout too.
