Armory named for soldier killed while serving in Afghanistan

QUINCY, Mass. (AP) - The Massachusetts National Guard has renamed a Quincy armory in memory of a Scituate (SIH’-choo-iht) resident who was killed in Afghanistan in 2005.

Sgt. Michael Kelley was 26 when he died on June 8, 2005, and was the first combat-related fatality during the campaign in Afghanistan for the Massachusetts National Guard.

The Patriot Ledger reports that Kelley’s family, local officials and members of the National Guard gathered at the armory where Kelley was previously stationed on Sunday for the dedication ceremony.

Built in 1924, the armory is undergoing a $4 million renovation funded by the state and federal governments.

A bridge over the North River connecting Marshfield and Scituate was named for Kelley in 2006.
