QUECHEE, Vt. (AP) - Vermont transportation officials say they hope to get federal funding to design suicide prevention measures for the Quechee Gorge Bridge.
The U.S. Route 4 bridge over the Quechee Gorge has been the site of 15 suicides since 2003, including two a year for the past two years.
A 2017 state report says the bridge’s reputation for suicides “combined with a relatively low and easily climbable barrier, may draw people to the bridge during times of crisis.”
The Valley News (https://bit.ly/2tA761L ) reports Vermont Transportation Agency officials hope to install either a barrier wall or a net below the bridge.
The state has erected kiosks with a call button for counseling services. There also are signs that read “YOU MATTER” with a crisis number to call.
