ASH, N.C. (AP) - A police officer in North Carolina won’t face charges in connection with a fatal shooting during the execution of a search warrant after a state probe found the man’s fatal wound was self-inflicted.
The StarNews of Wilmington reports that Maj. Laurie Watson was assisting federal officers with a child pornography investigation as head of the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office Investigative Division on March 7 when 29-year-old Bradley Barrett Lewis displayed a weapon. Lewis and Watson each fired a single shot.
A news release from Brunswick County District Attorney Jon David says the State Bureau of Investigation determined Watson’s gunshot missed Lewis, and that he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Lewis succumbed to his wound March 17.
