LANSING, Mich. (AP) - The Michigan Legislature has voted to limit the number of state-sponsored licensed plates used to raise money for groups and causes.
Legislation approved Tuesday by the Senate and House would cap the number at 20, not including university plates. Michigan has 15 university plates and 14 specialty fundraising plates, not including military plates.
The bill going to Gov. Rick Snyder would also revise the start-up fee that groups must pay Michigan to develop a new fundraising plate. It’s currently $15,000. Under the legislation, the fee would equal the three-year average of the state’s cost to develop the plate.
The bill was sponsored by former Rep. Peter Pettalia, a Republican from Presque Isle who was killed in a motorcycle crash in September.
