WASHINGTON (AP) - District of Columbia lawmakers have given final approval to a bill that will provide up to eight weeks of paid leave for the birth or adoption of a child.

The D.C. Council voted 9 to 4 Tuesday to approve the plan, which now goes to the mayor.

The plan would be paid for by a new tax on businesses and would be one of the nation’s most generous paid family leave programs.

In a statement, Mayor Muriel Bowser called the proposal “costly” Tuesday and said she would “not add my name to this legislation.” Bowser can let the bill take effect without her signature, however, and the council’s vote margin is enough to override a veto. Like all District laws, the bill has to pass a period of Congressional review.
