ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - New York lawmakers and Gov. Andrew Cuomo haven’t given up on holding a special session this month, one potentially focused on giving lawmakers their first pay raise in 17 years.
The Democratic governor told reporters Monday that negotiations remain underway and that no agreements have been made.
He says if lawmakers do return to Albany this month he wants them to do more than take up a pay raise. He’s said lawmakers could also consider government ethics reform, support for housing and funding for a new hate crimes task force.
Lawmakers now make $79,500. Many legislators say it doesn’t reflect the job’s demands.
Any pay increase must be approved by Dec. 31 in order to take effect in 2017.
