PHOENIX (AP) - The Latest on the swearing-in of 2 new Arizona Supreme Court justices (all times local):
1:30 p.m.
A state appellate court judge and Arizona’s solicitor general have been sworn in as members of the Arizona Supreme Court.
Gov. Doug Ducey appointed the two fellow Republicans last month to the new seats, and they formally took office at a state Capitol ceremony on Monday. Ducey signed legislation in May to add two justices to the five-member state high court.
The two are Andrew Gould, who has been on the Arizona Court of Appeals since 2012 and previously spent more than a decade as a Yuma County Superior Court judge. John Lopez IV has been Arizona’s solicitor general since January 2015 and was previously a federal prosecutor.
The solicitor general handles criminal appeals, defends constitutional challenges to state laws and issues legal opinions.
Ducey said the two are exactly the kinds of justices he wanted to see on the state’s highest court.
