ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Democrat John Brooks has prevailed in a tight state Senate race on Long Island - more than a month after election day.

Incumbent Republican Sen. Michael Venditto conceded the race on Friday after final ballots were counted. Brooks is expected to take his seat in the Senate when it reconvenes in January in Albany.

Brooks was ahead by 33 votes on election night, a too-close-to-call outcome that pushed the race into overtime and prompted local election officials to carefully tally the remaining votes.

The victory gives Democrats a one-seat majority in the Senate. Republicans are expected to retain control of the chamber, however. That’s because of a small faction of Democrats has broken ranks with its party to empower the GOP.
