PARK TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Authorities say a 17-year-old boy died after jumping off a pier with a friend at Holland State Park along Lake Michigan.
The Holland Sentinel and The Grand Rapids Press report Jose Moreno was pulled from the roughly 43-degree water off Park Township following a Wednesday search by divers.
Principal Todd Tulgestke of West Ottawa High School says Moreno was a well-liked student and a varsity soccer player. He was scheduled to graduate June 1.
The Ottawa County sheriff’s department says Moreno jumped with a friend, who made it back to the pier. The friend tried to throw life rings, but the teen went underwater. The department says Moreno was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Sheriff’s Sgt. Cal Keuning says cold water may have been a factor.
