A man is in the hospital with life-threatening injuries after falling onto the tracks as a Metrorail train approached at the Virginia Square-GMU station.

The man, unnamed by authorities, fell onto the tracks at 11:48 a.m. Friday, the Metrorail Info account said on social media.

The account referred to the man as a trespasser, but the Metro Transit Police Department said its initial investigation found he stumbled onto the tracks by accident as a train approached, according to Washington’s WTTG.

Arlington Fire and EMS responded to the station and extricated the man, who was trapped underneath the train following his fall.

He was taken to Arlington’s Virginia Hospital Center, county fire officials said on social media. They did not specify the nature of the man’s injuries.

Metro temporarily shut down Orange and Silver line trains between the Clarendon and Ballston stations as first responders worked to free the injured man, moving to single tracking around 1 p.m. before ending single tracking at 2:21 p.m., the Metrorail Info account said.
