CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Logan County Delegate Rupie Phillips says he’s left the Democratic Party.

Phillips announced in a news release Thursday that he’s now an independent and was filing paperwork with the secretary of state’s office.

The move means there are now 36 Democrats in the House. Republicans hold the majority with 63. Phillips is the only independent.

He says he hopes his move “sends a message to everyone that the people of southern West Virginia want and deserve change.”
