In this Nov. 23, 2012 photo, activist Nazly Hussein pauses during an interview with the Associated Press in Cairo, Egypt. After being detained at a Cairo protest, Hussein was among 14 women, some of Egypt’s most prominent democracy advocates, who were beaten, pulled by the hair and piled into a police van, taken on a sinister nighttime ride through the desert where they were finally dumped by the road, the women recount. The abuse, reminiscent of the Hosni Mubarak era, points to how Egypt’s new military-backed authorities are becoming bolder in silencing dissent, exploiting the fight against Islamists and divisions among secular activists.
