Royal Caribbean rerouted its Independence of the Sea cruise ship this week from Bermuda to Canada due to inclement weather along the East Coast.
Guests boarded the Independence of the Sea expecting a five-night trip to Bermuda. But passengers aboard the vessel learned of the route change on Saturday in a last minute email, and crew members arrived Monday at Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada.
“We’ve been closely monitoring inclement weather developing off the East Coast,” the company said in a statement. “After exploring all options, we’ve decided to sail to Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada, for an overnight stay instead.”

The vessel was carrying 3,858 passengers, according to the Royal Caribbean Blog.
The incident comes just a few days after another cruise liner, also from Royal Caribbean, told more than 5,000 passengers en-route to the Bahamas that they would be heading for Halifax, Nova Scotia, instead following reports of bad weather.
Under Royal Caribbean’s passenger contract, the company has the right to reroute the ship for due to weather, safety, or mechanical issues and is not legally required to give customers a refund.
