A 97-year-old man died at his birthday party in Los Angeles last week, moments after he was seen dancing to the Bee Gees’ disco hit “Stayin’ Alive.”

The man, identified as Vito by the New York Post, was attending a birthday party thrown for him by his neighbor and friend, Eden Malinoff, 24.

Ms. Malinoff posted footage Monday to TikTok of Vito dancing and happy as the Bee Gees played in the background.

Ms. Malinoff says things took a turn after the singing of “Happy Birthday,” when shortly after the song, Vito died.

“This past week was Vito’s 97th birthday, and in true Vito fashion, he wanted to celebrate by throwing a Halloween birthday rager,” Ms. Malinoff said in a statement.

“Unfortunately the night did not end as anticipated and Vito made a dramatic exit,” Ms. Malinoff continued. “But if there’s any way he could have chosen to go out it would have been like this. He was surrounded by people he loved, we were celebrating his long and full life, and I’m just so grateful I got to be a part of it.”

Vito told Ms. Malinoff that his secret to long life was to avoid “cheap liquor.”

Ms. Malinoff confirmed that the 97-year-old had underlying medical issues.

“He had some medical issues that we didn’t know the severity of, and he passed away peacefully with his favorite music going,” she said.
