The Michigan Department of Natural Resources issued a report Wednesday, April 23, 2014, that the estimated number of gray wolves in Michigan's Upper Peninsula has declined for the second consecutive year to about 636 following the state’s first wolf hunt in decades. But the agency said the change isn't statistically significant and the resurgent predator is maintaining a healthy presence in the state's far north. FILE - This April 18, 2008, file photo provided by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife shows a gray wolf. Michigan’s first wolf hunt in four decades was held Nov. 15-Dec. 31, 2013. Wildlife biologists say that 17 of the 23 wolves killed were in places within known territories of packs with reputations for “conflicts,” a term that includes repeatedly attacking livestock or pets and exhibiting “fearless behavior” around people. Reducing such conflicts was a major goal of the hunt, officials say. (AP Photo/U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Gary Kramer, File)
