Five pedestrians died in separate crashes throughout the D.C. region in the past week, with the District already surpassing the number of traffic fatalities from last year.
Police in Montgomery County, Maryland, on Wednesday identified the mother who was fatally struck in Rockville two days earlier while she was out on a walk with her 4-year-old son.
Authorities said the woman, Raoudha Khelifi, 44, was hit by a driver in the area of Chapman Avenue and Twinbrook Parkway just before 8:30 p.m. Monday.
Emergency personnel rushed Ms. Khelifi to a hospital, where she died. Her son escaped the incident with minor injuries.

In another deadly crash, Metropolitan Police said they are looking for a driver who struck and killed a woman in the District before speeding off.
The wreck occurred around 6:50 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of North Capitol Street and New York Avenue Northwest.
Investigators said Shanell Holiday, 29, was crossing New York Avenue when the traffic stoplight turned green and westbound vehicles began proceeding in her direction.
The victim continued to cross the road until a 2011 blue Subaru Legacy hit her. Police said Ms. Holiday died at the scene.
Detectives said they found the Subaru abandoned a short time later. No description of the suspect has been shared.
The deadly collision that started the recent trend took place Saturday night in Dumfries when a man was hit by two cars.
Prince William County police said Emanuel De Jesus Burgos Mejia, 44, tried crossing Fraley Boulevard when he was struck by a Lexus driver heading south on the road.
Moments later, police said a BMW driver also going southbound likewise struck Mr. Burgos Mejia.
The victim was not walking in a designated crosswalk and was not wearing reflective clothing when the crash happened.
Metropolitan Police have documented 29 deadly collisions involving motorists, cyclists and pedestrians this year, surging past the 25 total killed on D.C. roads in 2025.
At this point last year, the District had recorded 13 traffic deaths.
