The Department of Justice’s third-in-command wants two Minnesota federal judges recused from a pair of cases because of comments the magistrates made to The New York Times about the White House’s legal approach to immigration.

Associate Attorney General Stanley Woodward filed motions to remove Judges Patrick Schiltz and John Tunheim after they expressed concern about cases tied to the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown in Minnesota earlier this year.

Judge Schiltz is handling a case trying to strip a Minnesota man of his American citizenship, and Judge Tunheim is overseeing whether a South African woman is accused of illegally voting in the 2024 election.
