HBO announced that “Girls,” the female-focused comedy about millennials created by Lena Dunham, will return for five new episodes a decade after the series ended its six-season run.

The network did not say when the episodes will air or stream, but filming will begin next year.

Ms. Dunham, 40, will reprise her role as Hannah Horvath alongside Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke, Zosia Mamet and Andrew Rannells, who play Marnie, Jessa, Shoshanna and Elijah, respectively.

Filmmaker Judd Apatow, who helped get the show on the air at HBO, will return as an executive producer.

HBO’s announcement on Tuesday did not mention Adam Driver, who played Ms. Dunham’s on-again, off-again love interest, or Jenni Konner, who was co-showrunner during the original run.

In her recently published memoir, “Famesick,” Ms. Dunham described difficult working relationships with both. She split professionally from Ms. Konner in 2018.
