Bravo’s Andy Cohen defends ‘Real Housewives’ for casting MAGA-aligned women

Bravo host Andy Cohen is standing by his decision to keep conservative women in the “Real Housewives” mix, telling a critical fan on Threads that the long-running franchise is “not about politics.”

Mr. Cohen, 58, who serves as host and executive producer of the “Real Housewives” universe, fielded questions from fans on Threads Sunday following the premiere of Season 5 of “The Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip.” One user pressed him on why the shows feature “so many MAGA women,” saying she could no longer stomach “The Real Housewives of Orange County” because of it.

Mr. Cohen pushed back, arguing that showcasing a range of political views is part of what keeps the franchise watchable.

“If we didn’t showcase people with different POV’s there would be no show,” he wrote, adding that the appeal of “Housewives” lies in the women’s relationships rather than their politics. He also defended Vicki Gunvalson’s return to the Orange County cast this season after some fans called her “unwatchable.”

The exchange is the latest flashpoint in a yearslong tug-of-war between Bravo’s cast members and viewers over the network’s political makeup. Former “Real Housewives of Orange County” star Kelly Dodd was dropped from the show in 2021 after facing public backlash over her COVID-19 remarks and comments some accused of mocking the Black Lives Matter movement. Ms. Dodd has said she believes she was fired for being conservative, though a Bravo producer told her at the time the network simply wanted to go in “a different direction,” according to Fox News.

Former “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” cast member Annemarie Wiley, who has described herself as an apolitical, longtime Democrat before joining the show, has said she was frozen out after leaving in 2024 over conservative positions, including her support for restricting transgender athletes from girls’ sports.

Political affiliation among the Bravo cast has been a running subplot since at least 2022, when former “Real Housewives of New Jersey” star Siggy Flicker told SiriusXM radio host Alex Marlow that most cast members across the franchise secretly lean Republican but hide it to protect their jobs.

“You’re literally swimming in a swamp, and it is disgusting,” Ms. Flicker said of working alongside Bravo’s production team, adding that colleagues had urged her to publicly claim she opposed President Trump. She has remained an outspoken Trump supporter since leaving the show, and in 2025, he appointed her to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council’s board.

Mr. Cohen did not name specific cast members in his Threads reply, though the franchise has featured other openly Trump-aligned women over the years, including Orange County’s Gretchen Rossi, who has celebrated Trump merchandise on camera, and “Real Housewives of New York City” alum Jill Zarin, a self-described friend of the Trump family who has attended both of his inaugurations.
