OPINION:
Where do all these socialists come from — the people who hate America and want to demolish the most successful country in human history?
For one, they or their parents arrive from foreign lands. And two, our colleges have become manufacturing centers for radical, left-wing ideologies. Who knows how many young people go in as patriots and leave as commissars?
The romanticized story of immigrants (that they come here because they love our country and want to pitch in) is still true. But mixed in is a growing number of foreigners and their children who hate this place.
Immigrating from Uganda, where the annual median household income is less than $2,000, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani doesn’t miss an opportunity to denounce America amid a town that is 38% foreign-born.
In his inaugural address, he said he will replaced “individualism” (an American hallmark) with “collectivism” (a Stalinist talking point). Mr. Mamdani is setting up state-owned grocery stores because they worked so well under communism, though often without actual food.
Islamist Mamdani rang in the Fourth of July by denouncing America as a place of hungry children. His wife, Rama Duwaji — who has “liked” Hamas videos of slaughtering Jews — skipped town and the country during that holiday, for some Islamic get-together. Mr. Mamdani’s father, a Columbia University professor, defends suicide bombers, the folks who kill innocents.
When Mr. Mamdani spells out his desired immigration plan, it involves flooding the country with Muslims. His model: Muhammad traveling to Medina in year 622. I won’t tell you what his army later did to non-believers, but it was not inclusive.
The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) is the hub of anti-Americanism. Its PowerPoint lesson is a step-by-step guide for dismantling our government, military, border, freedom and Western civilization. It boasts 120,000 members nationwide, a rapid rise. It had just 7,000 as the 21st century began.
An internal survey showed that 80% of DSA members have a college degree. Nearly half earn less than $60,000. That’s a lot of frustrated college grads.
The day after the Oct. 7, 2023, slaughter of Israelis by Hamas — as Israel was beginning the gruesome task of collecting the bodies of men, women and babies massacred by Islamists — the DSA had no time for politeness. It condemned Israel in an official statement, sealing the bond between American socialists and Islamic terrorism.
Here’s a look at DSA members on the verge of power.
Darializa Avila Chevalier beat a Democrat to win a U.S. House seat from New York come November. While a student at Columbia University, Ms. Chevalier helped found the anti-Israel Columbia University Apartheid Divest, which proudly announces a goal of eradicating Western civilization (America). She is the product of immigrant parents from the Dominican Republic.
The DSA candidate for Wisconsin governor is Francesca Hong, whose parents immigrated from South Korea. She expresses disdain for America and wants to end our cherished holiday of Thanksgiving, which she calls “incredibly painful” for her voters.
The media bro binding all these insanely radical politicos together is podcaster and communist Hasan Piker. Mr. Piker has called for murdering Republicans, specifically Florida Sen. Rick Scott. He lauded Mao, who slaughtered 40 million of his own people in peacetime. He also likes the Soviet Union and Fidel Castro.
Mr. Piker’s Turkish parents came to America for his birth, then returned to Turkey, where the newly minted American citizen grew up and then came back as an adult to attend college and promote anti-Americanism. He said in 2019 that America “deserved” the Sept. 11 attacks by lunatic al-Qaida Islamists.
Who is producing this nutty political movement? Colleges.
You know something is amiss in the Ivy League when a Cornell professor attends a “Free Palestine” rally after Oct. 7, 2023, and tells the crowd he was “exhilarated” by Hamas’ killing of over 1,200 Israelis, including babies.
Luigi Mangione graduated from the Ivy League University of Pennsylvania. After being accused of killing a healthcare CEO — shot in the back on a New York City street — Mr. Mangione became a left-wing celebrity. In 2024, a Penn professor made a TikTok video praising him.
There is a new book that tells the corrupt college narrative. Rep. Elise Stefanik, New York Republican, was a harsh critic of the way Ivy League schools tolerated violent “Free Palestine” activists harassing Jewish students. She wrote a best-selling book, “Poisoned Ivies: The Inside Account Of The Academic and Moral Rot at America’s Elite Universities.”
“First, radical left-wing political ideology is now synonymous with higher education,” Ms. Stefanik writes. “Universities are monocultures, where faculty, staff, and administrators operate like a herd.”
She cites a survey that found Democratic faculty outnumber Republicans by at least 8-1. More than one-third of students back violence to suppress speech.
Ms. Stefanik quotes David Friedman, former U.S. ambassador to Israel, who expressed disgust with Columbia University, his alma mater. “As you watch today as the campus goes up in proverbial smoke, understand that you invited hatred into your school and hatred has now consumed it,” he said in a 2024. “You gave scholarships to foreigners who hate America.”
Ms. Stefanik writes, “Elite institutions have deprioritized American students and dramatically increased their attention to foreign students.”
College foreign enrollment has more than doubled since 2000 from 514,000 to 1.2 million.
The Islamic country of Qatar gave nearly $300 million to Columbia from 2014 to 2019. It has donated over $3 billion to Cornell.
The home of Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood does not have our best interests at heart. It donates so that colleges will admit more Muslim students and hire more Islamist professors, then pay them Qatar-bloated salaries.
