HUNTSVILLE, Alabama — The future of space-based military operations, the need for more rapid replenishment of American munitions stockpiles, and President Trump’s signature Golden Dome missile shield are all in the spotlight as top Pentagon officials and defense contractors descend on a major conference that opens here Tuesday.
The annual Space & Missile Defense Symposium is slated to draw more than 9,000 attendees to this Southeastern U.S. city, long nicknamed “Rocket City” for its role in space exploration and missile development. Huntsville has emerged anew in the Trump era as an epicenter of American dominance over 21st-century space-defense technology amid growing threats from China and Russia.
U.S. Space Force Gen. Michael A. Guetlein, Mr. Trump’s handpicked director of the multibillion-dollar Golden Dome project, is scheduled to address the symposium. So is Gen. Stephen N. Whiting, commander of U.S. Space Command, which is currently involved in a monthslong relocation of its headquarters to Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville.
Others, such as Lt. Gen. John Rafferty, head of U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command — also headquartered at Redstone — are slated to speak and participate in panel discussions on everything from how artificial intelligence is changing U.S. ground- and space-based missile defense, to the immediate question of how the defense industry can build missiles faster and at lower costs amid the ongoing wars in the Mideast and Europe.
The administration is pushing for historic increases in defense spending. But industry and congressional sources have told Threat Status at The Washington Times that back-hallway discussions at this year’s symposium are likely to hinge on the extent to which the expanding cost of replenishing U.S. missiles that are used up in the Iran and Ukraine wars may detract from funding for such ambitious and futuristic projects as Golden Dome.
Anxiety over munitions stockpiles has boiled over in Washington during recent weeks. A Center for Strategic & International Studies analysis last month stated that U.S. Patriot and Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile interceptor stockpiles have dropped by two-thirds and by half, respectively, since the start of the U.S.-Israel war against Iran in February.

Mr. Trump has pushed back. “Large amounts are being manufactured and shipped to the U.S. as needed,” the president wrote in a post on Truth Social last week. “Defense companies are building the largest number of plants and factories in our country’s history.”
Factories are indeed being built across the U.S. with an influx of investment from major defense technology companies, a notable shift that has rocked the industry over the past two years. The Pentagon also has begun channeling significant government-backed investments directly into several of the companies responsible for missile production.
Several large missile-related production orders the Pentagon plans to place for critical munitions are currently sitting in the as-yet-unpassed portion of the 2027 Congressional budget.
Some 86% of the Trump administration’s requests for funds are still awaiting reconciliation, according to an exclusive data analysis created for Threat Status by Obviant, a Virginia-based artificial intelligence data analytics firm.
It’s a situation that has some lawmakers and Pentagon officials worried that up-and-coming programs could be sacrificed in place of payments for older missiles and interceptors, many of which won’t be produced for at least two years, regardless of the funding, according to long-time members of the defense industry familiar with missile production.
All of this will be in focus at the symposium in Huntsville, one of the nation’s epicenters for cutting-edge research, development and fielding capabilities in the space and military domains.
In addition to being home to Redstone Arsenal, a sprawling 38,000-acre federal complex hosting offices for more than 70 organizations, including NASA, Army Materiel Command and the U.S. Missile Defense Agency, Huntsville is home to the Davidson Center for Space Exploration, a museum highlighting the history of U.S. space programs.
A slew of defense companies, most of which sponsor the Space & Missile Defense Symposium, maintain robust operations in and around Huntsville, including Lockheed Martin, United Launch Alliance, Boeing, Leidos, L3 Harris Technologies, Northrop Grumman and a wide range of others involved in U.S. missile defense such as Davidson Technologies.
The data analysis generated for Threat Status by Obviant sheds light on a record $12.8 billion in funding that the Pentagon allocated in 2025 for projects based in Huntsville. The city and its surrounding areas have seen an 82% increase in Pentagon-funded research and development and manufacturing.
The intersection between space-based missile defense and 21st-century great power geopolitics courses through what’s going on in Huntsville.
Gen. Whiting, of U.S. Space Command, made headlines earlier this year by publicly discussing a new operational plan for defending American assets in space, and Russia’s potential for placing a nuclear anti-satellite weapon in orbit. This week’s symposium will give Gen. Whiting a pivotal moment to speak directly to defense companies and the public on how he sees Space Command addressing these and other issues, including what many see as increasingly aggressive posturing by China in orbit.
Gen. B. Chance Saltzman, who retired last week from his post as chief of U.S. Space Force operations, told Threat Status in an exclusive video interview earlier this year that his job is to “think about worst-case scenarios” when it comes to potential threats in space, whether they are Russian “nesting doll” satellites or Chinese “grappling arm” tactics that could suddenly become weaponized.
“We used to say there are emerging threats. I don’t say that anymore. There are threats in orbit,” said Gen. Saltzman, who noted a widening landscape of threats, from directed energy, lasers, radio frequency jammers and straight-up kinetic capabilities such as missiles in space.
“U.S. adversaries,” he said, “are investing in all those categories of weapons…and we are seeing operational deployments of a great many of those categories of weapons today.”
The status of the Golden Dome missile defense shield will also be a hot topic at this week’s symposium, with Gen. Guetlein slated to provide a public update Tuesday on the next-generation missile defense shield that Pentagon documents say is being built to defend against potential “ballistic, hypersonic, advanced cruise missiles and other next-generation aerial attacks” against the entire U.S. homeland.
The architecture of Golden Dome is classified, and its funding has been a point of contention between lawmakers and the Pentagon.
A report by the Congressional Budget Office in May estimated the missile shield could cost as much as $1.2 trillion over a 20-year period. The White House initially estimated that the entire Golden Dome project would cost $175 billion over three years.
Gen. Guetlein put the price tag at roughly $185 billion during congressional testimony earlier this year, with some $10 billion to be spent on space-based systems.
The Pentagon has already announced significant contracts for advanced Hypersonic and Ballistic Tracking Space Sensors (HBTSS) in orbit as part of Golden Dome’s development.
The development of such technologies and the speed and cost at which U.S. companies are able to manufacture them have been a theme at the Space & Missile Defense Symposium during recent years.
Some of the world’s most advanced space and earth-based technologies will be on display at this year’s event, which organizers describe as “the largest gathering of industry leaders, government officials and technical experts” focused on space operations and missile defense systems.
