Secret Service officials said agents shot an armed man from Indiana near the White House early Sunday.
Agency spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said no one else was injured in the shooting that happened shortly after midnight Sunday near the corner of 17th and G streets NW.
Officials said they spotted the armed man and his car after D.C. police had tipped off the Secret Service about an allegedly suicidal man who traveled from Indiana.
“As officers approached, the individual brandished a firearm and an armed confrontation ensued, during which shots were fired by our personnel,” Mr. Guglielmi said.
Authorities identified the man as Andrew Dawson, 27, of North Manchester, Indiana. He was taken to a hospital after being wounded, although it’s unclear what condition he is in.
Mr. Dawson has a past arrest on drug and paraphernalia charges in 2018. Authorities believe he was trying to commit “suicide by cop,” according to the New York Post.
President Trump was in Florida when the shots rang out early Sunday.
