The Washington Nationals spent $140 million to land a third strong arm to their starting rotation. He’ll be up first in the National League Divisional Series.

Patrick Corbin will get the ball for the Nationals in Game 1 of the NLDS against the Los Angeles Dodgers, after both Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg were required to get Washington a wild-card win Tuesday.

“I will tell you right now, yeah, Patrick Corbin will start Game 1,” Nationals manager Dave Martinez said after the game.

The Nationals beat the Milwaukee Brewers 4-3 in the NL Wild Card Game. Scherzer pitched five innings and allowed three Brewers to score, all off home runs. Strasburg held the Nationals at 3-1 until Juan Soto broke through with his game-winning 3-run single in the bottom of the eighth.

Corbin, a left-hander with a nasty slider, finished his first year in Washington with a 14-7 record, a 3.25 ERA and 238 strikeouts. He signed a six-year contract with the Nationals last winter after starting his MLB career with the Diamondbacks.
